AI4HF Showcases Participatory AI Approach at the European Public Health Conference 2025

AI4HF was featured at the European Public Health Conference 2025 in Helsinki, where Miriam Cabrita (SHINE 2Europe) presented the project’s participatory approach to developing equitable and trustworthy AI tools for healthcare.

Miriam’s presentation highlighted the work carried out with Local Working Groups in Tanzania, Peru, Czechia, Spain, and the Netherlands. These groups bring together patients and clinicians who share everyday challenges, map patient–professional interactions, identify potential biases, and test early prototypes. Their contributions ensure that the AI tools reflect the cultural, clinical, and organizational contexts of each setting.

Across all pilot sites, several common barriers are emerging from long travel distances and limited health literacy to mistrust in technology and low digital skills. These insights are already helping the consortium refine the tools and shape broader multistakeholder discussions on equitable AI in healthcare.

Building on this work, the next Local Working Groups sessions planned for early 2026 will explore how patients interpret risk information and how intuitive the interfaces feel from a user perspective. These upcoming rounds will deepen the project’s understanding of user needs and inform the next iteration of AI4HF prototypes.

This year’s conference brought together nearly 3,000 researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, providing a valuable opportunity to share AI4HF’s early results and underline the importance of inclusive, participatory design in digital health innovation.
